This poem was written by Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse, when he migrated from the village he grew up in and where his father was buried, Leona Niassene, to the site of his current town, Medina Baye in 1930. He stopped under a tree on his way to the current site of Medina and wrote this poem during that migration.
ﺻﺎﺭﻣﻦ ﻭﺻﻞ ﺍﻟﻐﻮﺍﻧﻰ ﻭﺍﻋﺘﺰﻝ ﺫﻛﺮ ﺍﻷ ﻏﺎ ﻧﻰ
Ṣāriman waṣla al-ghawānī
W-aʿtazil dhikra al-ʾaghānī
Cut off your connection to beautiful women, Turn away from mention of songs
ﻭﺍﺭﻡ ﺑﺎﻟﺒﻴﺾ ﺍﻟﺤﺴﺎﻥ ﻭﺍﺳﻞ ﻣﺨﺘﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﺎﻧﻰ
W-armi bi-l-bīḍi il-ḥisāni
W-asli makhtūma ad-dināni
And forsake the fair, beautiful ones, And forget the sealed wine jugs,
ﻭﺍﻟملاﻫﻰ ﻭﺍﻟﻤﻐﺎﻧﻰ ﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺍﻥ ﺍﻭﻣﺒﺎﻧﻰ
Wa-l-malāhī wa-l-maghānī
Min kirānin ʾaw mabānin
And the entertainment halls and villas, The lofty places and the buildings.
ﻛﻞ ﺫﻯ ﻭﻳﻚ ﺳﺮﺍﺏ ﻭﺍﺑﻎ ﺭﻭﺣﺎ ﻟﻠﻤﻌﺎﻧﻰ
Kullu dhī wayka sarābun
W-abghi rūḥan li-l-maʿānī
Woe unto that! All of it is a blind feat and mirage. Seek instead, the spirit of all meaning.
ﻋﻴﻦ ﻫﺎﺀ ﺣﻖ ﺣﻖ ﺗﺎ ﻟﻴﺎ ﺳﺒﻊ ﺍﻟﻤﺜﺎﻧﻰ
ʿAynu hāʾin ḥaqqu ḥaqqin
Tāliyan sabʿa al-mathānī
The essence of ‘Hāʾ’, the truth of truth, The reciter of the Seven Oft-Repeated verses.
ﺑﺼﻔﺎﺕ ﺍﻟﺬﺍﺕ ﺣﻘﺎ ﺭﺗﺒﺔ ﻟﻴﺴﺖ ﻟﺜﺎﻧﻰ
Bi-ṣifāti idh-dhāti ḥaqqan
Rutbatan laysat li-thāni
By the attributes of the Divine Essence, in its truth, He has a rank which is for no other.
ﻓﻬﻮ ﻣﺨﺘﺎﺭ ﺍﻟﺒﺮﺍﻳﺎ ﻗﺒﻞ ﺗﻜﻮﻳﻦ ﺍﻟﻜﻴﺎﻧﻰ
Fahwa Mukhtāra al-barāyā
Qabla takwīni il-kiyāni
For he is the Selected one from creation, Before even the being of existence.
ﺑﺮﺯﺕ ﺣﻀﺮﺓ ﻃﻪ ﻗﺒﻞ ﺗﻜﻮﻳﻦ ﺍﻟﻤﻜﺎﻥ
Barazat ḥaḍratu Ṭāhā
Qabla takwīni il-makāni
The presence of Ṭāhā emerged, Before the making of space itself.
ﻭﻟﻪ ﻋﻤﺮ ﻃﻮﻳﻞ ﻗﺒﻞ ﺗﻘﺪﻳﺮ ﺍﺯﻣﺎﻥ
Wa lahū ʿumrum ṭawīlun
Qabla taqdīri iz-zamāni
He has a very lengthy life, Beginning before even the ordaining of time.
ﺇﻧﻨﻰ ﻗﺒﻞ ﺍﻟﺒﺮﺍﻳﺎ ﺣﺒﻪ ﺷﻐﻞ ﺍﻟﺠﻨﺎﻧﻰ
ʾInnanī qabla al-barāyā
Ḥubbuhū shaghlu ul-janāni
Indeed, before creation, His love occupied my heart.
ﻓﻬﻮ ﺍﻛﻠﻰ ﻭﺷﺮﺍﺑﻰ ﻭﻫﻮ ﺩﻳﻨﻰ ﻭﺟﻨﺎﻧﻰ
Fahwa ʾaklī wa sharābī
Wahwa dīnī wa jinānī
Therefore, he is my food and my drink, And he is my religion and my Paradise.
ﻭﻫﻮ ﺃﻧﺴﻰ ﻭﻫﻮ ﻛﻨﺰﻯ ﻭﺍﻣﻴﻨﻰ ﻭﺍﻣﺎﻧﻰ
Wahwa ʾunsī wahwa kanzī
Wa ʾamīnī wa ʾamānī
And he is my solace, and he is my treasure, And he is my guardian and my safety.
ﻭﺭﻓﻴﻘﻰ ﻭﻃﺮﻳﻘﻰ ﻭﺟﻮﺍﺩﻯ ﻭﺳﻨﺎﻧﻰ
Wa rafīqī wa ṭarīqī
Wa jawādī wa sinānī
And my friend and my way, And my generous master and my spear.
ﻭﺭﺑﻮﻋﻰ ﻭﻗﺼﻮﺭﻯ ﻭﻫﻮ ﺧﻴﺮﺍﺕ ﺍﻟﺤﺴﺎﻧﻰ
Wa rubūʿī wa quṣūrī
Wahwa khayrātu ul-ḥisāni
And my dwellings and my palaces, And he is the best of all good things.
ﻭﻫﻮ ﺑﻴﻌﻰ ﻭﺷﺮﺍﺉ ﻭﻫﻮ ﺣﺮﺛﻰ ﻭﺟﻨﺎﻧﻰ
Wahwa bayʿī wa shirāʾī
Wahwa ḥarthī wa jinānī
And he is my trade and my purchasing, And he is my cultivation and my gardens.
ﻟﻴﺲ ﻟﻲ ﻏﻴﺮ ﺍﻟﻤﻘﻔﻰ ﻭﻟﺬﺍ ﺗﺎﻡ ﺟﻨﺎﻧﻰ
Laysa lī ghayru ul-Muqaffā
Wa li-dhā tāma janānī
No one is there for me except the Exemplary one, Because of that, my heart is enthralled with love.
لاﺗﺮﻯ ﺫﻛﺮا ﺳﻮﺍﻩ ﻏﻴﺮ ﻟﻬﻮ ﻭﻣﺠﺎﻧﻰ
Lā tarā dhikran siwāhu
Ghayra lahwin wa majānin
You will not see mention of other than him, Except distractions and frivolities.
ﻭﺍﻣﺘﺪﺍﺡ ﻟﺴﻮﺍﻩ ﻃﻴﻒ جن لاﻋﺮﺍﻧﻰ
W-amtidāḥun li-siwāhu
Ṭayfu jinnin lā ʿarānī
And praise for anyone other than him, Is like the phantom of a jinn, it is not real to me.
ﺇﻧﻨﻰ ﻃﻮﻝ ﺣﻴﺎﺗﻰ ﺭﺏ ﺍﻣﻦ ﻭﺍﻣﺎﻧﻰ
ʾInnanī ṭūla ḥayātī
Rubba ʾamnin wa ʾamāni
Indeed, for as long as my life, He has been a guardian and kept me safe.
ﻹﻧﺘﺼﺎﺭﻯ ﺑﺎﻟﻤﻔﺪﻯ ﻭﻫﻮﻋﻴﻨﻰ ﻭﻋﻴﺎﻧﻰ
L-intiṣārī bi-l-mufaddā
Wahwa ʿaynī wa ʿiyānī
As my victory is through the Redeemer, And he is my essence and my vision.
ﻓﻔﺆﺍﺩﻯ ﻣﺬ ﺯﻣﺎﻥ ﻓﻰ ﺟﺪﻳﺪ ﺍﻟﻬﻴﻤﺎﻧﻰ
Fa-fuʾādī mudh zamānin
Fī shadīdi il-hayamāni
Thus, my heart since a long time, Has been severely in intense love.
ﻭﺣﺒﻴﺒﻰ ﻣﺬ ﺷﻔﺎﻧﻰ ﻭﺻﻔﺎﻟﻰ ﻗﺪ ﻣﺤﺎﻧﻰ
Wa Ḥabībī mudh shafānī
Wa ṣafā lī qad maḥānī
And since my beloved cured me, And purified me, he has freed me.
ﻭﻫﻮﺍﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﻭﺃﻳﻀﺎ ﺭﻣﺰﻩ ﻫﺎﺀ ﺍﻟﺘﺪﺍﻧﻰ
Wa huwa al-ʿabdu wa ʾayḍan
Ramzuhū hāʾu ut-tadānī
He is the servant (of Allāh), and also, His hallmark is this benefit he gives.
ﻭﻫﻮ ﻋﻴﻦ ﺍﻹﺳﻢ ﻭﺍﻟﺤﺮﻑ ﻟﺘﺤﻘﻴﻖ المعاﻧﻰ
Wahwa ʿaynu ul-ʾismi wa al-ḥar-
-fi li-taḥqīqi il-maʿānī
He is the essence of the noun and the verb, And the particle, for comprehending meanings.
ﻭﺣﺒﻴﺒﻰ ﻭﻣﻌﺎﺩﻯ ﻓﻰ ﺗﻘﺎﺹ ﻭﺗﺪﺍﻧﻰ
Wa ḥabībī wa maʿādī
Fī taqāṣin wa tadāni
And he is my beloved and my place of return, In reckoning and repayment.
ﻭﻫﻮ ﺩﺍﺉ ﻭﺩﻭﺍﺉ ﻗﺪ ﺑﺮﺍﻧﻰ ﻭﺷﻔﺎﻧﻰ
Wa huwa dāʾī wa dawāʾī
Qad barānī wa shafānī
And he is my ailment and my cure, He has afflicted me and healed me.
ﻟﻴﺘﻪ ﺍﻟﻮﻗﺖ ﺣﺒﺎﻧﻰ ﻭﺻﻠﻪ ﻓﻬﻮ ﻛﻔﺎﻧﻰ
Laytahū ul-waqta ḥabānī
Waṣlahū fahwa kafānī
If only time had granted me, A chance to meet him, for that would suffice me.
ﺩﺍﺀ ﺷﻮﻗﻲ ﻛﻞ ﻭﻗﺖ ﻓﻰ ﺷﺪﻳﺪ ﺍﻟﻬﻴﺠﺎﻧﻰ
Daʾu shawqī kulla waqtin
Fī shadīdi il-hayajāni
The ailment of my longing at all times, Is in intense turmoil.
ﺫﻝ ﻧﻔﺴﻰ ﻭﻫﻮﺍﻧﻰ ﻣﻔﺨﺮﻯ ﺭﻭﺽ ﺍﻟﺠﻨﺎﻥ
Dhullu nafsī wa hawānī
Mafkharī rawḍu ul-jināni
The humility of my soul and my lowliness, Are my pride in the garden of Paradise.
ﻣﺎ ﺑﻘﻰ ﻟﻰ ﻣﻦ ﺑﻘﺎﺀ ﻣﻦ ﻏﺮﺍﻣﻰ ﻭﺣﻨﺎﻧﻰ
Mā baqā lī min baqāʾin
Min gharāmī wa ḥanānī
Nothing lasting has remained for me, Due to my passion and love.
ﻭﺯﻓﻴﺮﻯ ﻭﺑﻜﺎﺀ ﻭﺍﺭﺍﻧﻰ ﻻ ﺍﺭﺍﻧﻰ
Wa zafīrī wa bukāʾī
Wa ʾarānī lā ʾarānī
And my sighs and my weeping, And I see myself yet do not see myself.
ﻻئمي ﻓﺎﺭﺙ ﻟﺤﺎﻟﻰ ﻗﺪ ﺩﻫﺎﻧﻰ ﻣﺎ ﺩﻫﺎﻧﻰ
Lāʾimī f-arthi li-ḥālī
Qad dahānī mā dahānī
Reproach me if you must about my condition, For what has befallen me has indeed befallen me.
ﻛﻢ ﺧﻠﻴﻞ ﻗﺪ ﺟﻔﺎﻧﻰ ﻟﻐﺮﺍﻣﻰ ﻭﺭﻣﺎﻧﻰ
Kam khalīlin qad jafānī
Li-gharāmī wa ramānī
How many a friend has fled from me, Due to my passion and my love.
ﺭﺏ ﺻﻨﻮ ﻛﻨﺖ ﺍﺭﺟﻮﺍ ﻭﺻﻠﻪ ﺛﻢ ﺟﻔﺎﻧﻰ
Rubba ṣinwin kunta ʾarjū
Waṣlahū thumma jafānī
How many of my brothers did I hope, To be with me, but he too would flee from me.
ﻭﻧﻬﺎﻧﻰ ﻭﻟﺤﺎﻧﻰ ﻭﺷﺠﺎﻧﻰ ﻭﻧﻔﺎﻧﻰ
Wa nahānī wa laḥānī
Wa shajānī wa nafānī
And forbid me and reprimand me, And trouble me and ostracize me.
ﻟﻴﺲ ﻟﻰ ﺍﻟﻴﻮﻡ ﺧﻠﻴﻞ ﻏﻴﺮ ﻣﺎ ﻣﻨﻚ ﺍﺗﺎﻧﻰ
Laysa li-l-yawma khalīlun
Ghayra mā minka ʾatānī
I have no friend today, Except for the one who has come to me from you.
ﻏﻴﺮ ﻫﺬﺍ ﻗﺪ قلاني ﻋﺎﺫﻻ ﻟﻰ ﻛﻞ ﺁﻧﻰ
Ghayru hādhā qad qalānī
ʿĀdhilan lī kulla ʾāni
Other than this, they detest me, In censure of me at all times.
ﻣﺰﻗﻮﺍ ﺟﻠﺪﻯ ﺟﻬﺎﺭﺍ ﺍﺧﺮﺟﻮﻧﻰ ﻣﻦ ﻣﻜﺎﻧﻰ
Mazzaqū jildī jihāran
ʾAkhrajūnī min makānī
They tore my skin openly, They exiled me from my place.
ﺩﻭﻥ ﺫﻧﺐ ﻏﻴﺮ ﺍﻧﻰ ﺣﺐ ﻃﻪ ﻓﻰ ﺟﻨﺎﻥ
Dūna dhanbin ghayra ʾannī
Ḥubbu Ṭāhā fī janānī
Without any sin, except that I, Love Ṭāhā in my heart.
ﻭﺃﺭﻯ ﻟﻮ ﻣﺰﻗﻮﻧﻰ ﺑﻤﻮﺍﺿﻰ ﺍﻟﻬﻨﺪﻭﺍﻧﻰ
Wa ʾarā law mazzaqūnī
Bi-mawāḍī il-hindawāni
I saw that even if they cut me, With the edges of Indian blades.
ﻭﺍﺭﺍﻧﻰ ﻟﺴﺖ ﺍﻟﻔﻰ ﺗﺎﺋﺒﺎ ﻣﺮ ﺍﻷﻭﺍﻧﻰ
Wa ʾarānī lastu ʾulfā
Tāʾiban marra al-ʾawāni
I saw that I am not found, Repentant with the passing of time.
ﻟﻢ ﻳﻨﺎﻟﻮﺍ ﻣﺎ ﺃﺭﺍﺩﻭﺍ ﻗﺪ ﻣﻀﻰ ﺫﺍ ﻭﻛﻔﺎﻧﻰ
Lam yanālū mā ʾarādū
Qad maḍā dhā wa kafānī
They never achieved what they intended, That has passed. Now, I have been sufficed.
ﻋﻠﻠﻮﻧﻰ ﺟﻴﺮﺗﻰ ﻣﻦ ﺫﻛﺮ ﻣﻦ ﻳﺘﻠﻮﺍ ﺍﻟﻤﺜﺎﻧﻰ
ʿAllilūnī jīratī min
Dhikri man yatlū ul-mathānī
O those around me, console me with Remembrance of the one who recited the Oft-Repeated verses.
ﺭﺩﺩﻭﺍ ﻟﻰ ﺫﻛﺮﻩ ﺣﻴﻦ ﺻﻔﺎﻟﻰ ﻭ ﺣﻤﺎﻧﻰ
Raddidū lī dhikrāhu ḥī-
-na ṣafā lī wa ḥamānī
Repeat for me his remembrance, As it purifies me and comforts me.
ﻭﻛﻔﺎﻧﻰ ﻃﻪ ﺣﺒﺎ ﻟﺴﺖ ﺍﺩﺭﻯ ﻣﻦ ﻕﻵﻧﻰ
Wa kafānī Ṭāhā ḥubban
Lastu ʾadrī man qalānī
Ṭāhā has sufficed me in love, I do not recognise those who detest me.
ﻟﺴﺖ ﺍﺧﺸﻰ ﻛﻴﺪ ﺍﻋﺪﺍﺀ ﻭلا ﺟﻮﺭ ﺍﻟﺰﻣﺎﻥ
Lastu ʾakhshā kayda ʾaʿdā-
-ʾin wa lā jawra az-zamāni
I do not fear the plots of enemies, Nor the oppression of this era.
ﻓﻤﻜﺎﻧﻰ ﻓﻰ ﺯﻣﺎﻧﻰ ﻭﺯﻣﺎﻧﻰ ﻓﻰ ﻣﻜﺎﻧﻰ
Fa-makānī fī zamānī
Wa zamānī fī makānī
As my place is in my own time, And my time is in my own place.
ﻭصلاﺓ ﻭ سلاﻡ ﻓﻰ ﺗﺼﺎﺭيف ﺍﻷﻭﺍﻧﻰ
Wa ṣalātun wa salāmun
Fī taṣārīfi il-ʾawāni
And salutations and peace, In the changing of all passing time,
ﻣﻦ ﺫﻭﺍﺕ ﺍﻟﺬﺍﺕ ﺗﺘﺮﻯ ﻧﺤﻮ ﻃﻪ ﻣﺎ ﻛﻔﺎﻧﻰ
Min dhawāti idh-dhāti tatrā
Naḥwa Ṭāhā mā kafānī
From the created beings, are sent, Towards Ṭāhā, in the amount that suffices,
ﺛﻢ ﺁﻝ ﻭ ﺻﺤﺎﺏ ﺻﺎﺭﻣﻮ ﺍ ﻭﺻﻞ ﺍﻟﻐﻮﺍﻧﻰ
Thumma ʾāli wa ṣiḥābin
Ṣāramū waṣl al-ghawānī
..And (towards) the family and companions, “Cut off your connection to beautiful women”.
