CLARIFICATIONS ABOUT TARBIYYA IN THE TIJANI TARIQAH

"The Tariqah is divided into two paths. The first is the path of ma'rifah (gnosis), which is by means of a specific murabbi (spiritual guide) in the path, by a method that is specific to said murabbi. The second is the path that leads to 'Illiyin above the eighth Paradise, which is the general path that is in the hands of all Muqaddams. It (the second path) is the universal path and is easiest.

However, it is the least desirable of the two because they (the people on that path) worship Allah seeking, in exchange for their worship, the pleasure of Allah or His love. Nevertheless, if He loves him, He will isolate him (for Himself). Thus, this (second) path is a good path because it is a means to obtaining the (Divine) love, which will lead to being dedicated to Allah alone.

However, the first path contains what is better because, from the start, it is bereft of the desires and aspirations (of the nafs). That is the path of annihilation with complete sobriety, purity, awareness and distinction. And distinction is the crown of the 'Arifin and complete annihilation is their desire. Understand this.

Likewise, the people of the 'Arif venerate him because of his status with their Lord, even if they are not fuqara', though the opposite is not the case. So, it is imperative to investigate and do not take the path in the first place, and then after entering the Tariqah, any invocation, except from the hand of an 'Arif (Gnostic) in the path."

- Sidi Shaykh al-Ahsan al-Ba'qilli

Excerpt from Ira'ah of Sidi al-Ahsan al-Ba'qilli (radhi Allahu 'anhu) [Tunis edition, 1440, vol. 1 pages 152-153]

"We have also already mentioned that there are, among the Muqaddams, those who are at the level of administering tarbiyyah and tarqiyyah by receiving permission for that from Allah (Exalted is He) directly in his inner being, by way of inspiration- which is a known matter to the people of this affair, or from the presence of the Messenger (sall Allahu 'alaihi wa sallam), or from the hand of one of the people of the Great Illumination, among the noble brethren. However, the people of this path do not proclaim or concern themselves with tarbiyyah, nor ascribing themselves to Shaykhood, out of etiquette with Allah (Exalted is He), with the His Messenger (sall Allahu 'alaihi wa sallam), and with Sidna Shaykh (may Allah be pleased with him).

That is why, in most of the lands, a murshid is customarily just called a muqaddam. However, in some of the lands to south and the desert of the greater Maghrib, those who are worthy of giving tarbiyyah are given the title of Shaykh, and those who are below their level are called Muqaddam, following the customary terms of the people of the older Tariqahs that are famous in the Maghrib. And there is no blame for using that terminology after knowing what it truly signifies. Understand this well. And Allah (Exalted is He) knows best."

- Sidi Shaykh al-'Arabi ibn Sa'ih.

Excerpt from Bughyat al-Mustafid of Sidi al-'Arabi ibn Sa'ih [Dar al-Jil, 1426 H/2005 edition, p. 345].

"So do not take the Tijani Tariqah, except from someone in whom the conditions for Shaykhhood are abundantly present. A matter has been neglected by the Shuyukh: If someone takes from one Saint and visits another, he will neither benefit by the first nor by the second. I mean for someone who desires to know Allah. As for just entering the Tariqah, it is obtained upon the hands of any Muqaddam, even an illiterate one.

However, it is imperative for a murabbi in the path to fulfill the conditions of the Shaykh. Nevertheless, in this Tariqah, it proclaiming it publicly has been proihibited. Thus, is not permitted for any muqaddam to do that, no matter what he has achieved. So, if Allah causes someone to know one (a murabbi), he should praise Allah. In addition, there is no problem if he were to inform those he loves about him. However, that should not be in an unrestricted way. For, he (the murabbi) does not like that anyone should make him famous.

...

If the person receiving the litany investigates thoroughly and the murabbi is deserving, then he will respect and venerate him like he does the Shaykh. And the outcome of the opening of the one who received it will be ma'rifah of Allah. However, if he does not investigate thoroughly, or he does so and the transmitter does not meet the requirements, then he will venerate him only as one of his brethren. And the result of the opening of the one who received it will be Paradise in 'Illiyyun.

And ma'rifah is excluded from him. For it can only occur upon the hand of an 'Arif. The prayer upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and give him peace) and other acts of worship illuminate the heart, but as for the presence of Allah, it is conditioned upon the customary means and well-known method upon the hands of the elect of the people of Allah, the people of Prophetic permission in special guidance. And they are the ones who have fulfilled the requirements of Sainthood and Shaykhhood."

- Sidi Shaykh al-Ahsan al-Ba'qilli (radhi Allahu 'anhu).

Excerpt from al-Shurb al-Safi of Sidi al-Ahsan al-Ba'qilli [vol. 1, p. 272]

Note: This is only information for some of our brethren who may see some of the stuff going around and get distracted or think that Shaykh Ibrahim and his true deputies are upon anything other than the Qur'an, the Sunnah and the Tijani Tariqah.

Notes;

1) Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse (radhi Allahu 'anhu) did not invent special tarbiyyah in the Tijani Tariqah. The tarbiyyah has always been divided into general tarbiyyah, which is just through transmissions of the litanies with authentic permission, and special tarbiyyah which is in the hands of people who have permission in tarbiyyah and tarqiyyah.

First picture is an excerpt from Ira'ah of Sidi al-Ahsan al-Ba'qilli (radhi Allahu 'anhu) [Tunis edition, 1440, vol. 1 pages 152-153]

2. From the previous excerpt, a murabbi in the Tariqah having a specific method is permitted and common. (by means of a specific murabbi, in a way that is specific to said murabbi)

3) Nor is tarbiyyah restricted to just those people with special permission. Rather, those who they authorize to give tarbiyyah may give tarbiyyah also.

Second picture is an excerpt from Bughyat al-Mustafid of Sidi al-'Arabi ibn Sa'ih [Dar al-Jil, 1426 H/2005 edition, p. 345]. The same excerpt is found on pages 656-657 of Sidi Genoun's edition.

4. From the previous excerpt: Murids calling their muqaddam murabbi a Shaykh is not problematic in the tariqah and has always been done by certain groups outside of Moroco.

5. A murabbi is one that fulfills the conditions of being a Shaykh and deserves the respect and veneration of a Shaykh.

Third picture is from al-Shurb al-Safi of Sidi al-Ahsan al-Ba'qilli [vol. 1, p. 272]

6.. From the previous excerpt, the Murabbi should not make open claims of tarbiyyah, but those who recognize his merit and follow him may tell people about him so that they can benefit.
