Thierno Yahya Ly, born in 1907, embarked on a spiritual journey at an early age, taking the Tijani Tariqa from Muhammad al-Tulba Ibn Ahmadou Ibn Muhammad al-Hafiz al-Shinqiti, known as the father of Shaykhani, when he was just five years old. This early induction into spiritual practice marked the beginning of a lifelong devotion to Islamic learning and mysticism.
Ly was nurtured in the study of the Quran and Islamic Sciences under the guidance of his maternal uncle, Muhammad Aw, a disciple of the Qadiri Shaykh Saab Bouh Ibn Shaykh Muhammad al-Fadhil. Living in Diourbel, near the revered Shaykh Ahmad Bamba, Ly and his uncle frequently visited Bamba, who recognized Ly's spiritual potential and entrusted him with the responsibility of performing Khalwa and prayers on his behalf.
In 1927, after years of living and studying in Diourbel, Ly began traveling across Senegal to seek knowledge and guidance from various Awliya and scholars, expanding his understanding and practice of Islamic spirituality. His journey eventually led him to Yoff in Dakar, where he was appointed as a teacher by Saydina Issa Laye, the son of the famous Imam Mahdi Laye.
It was in Dakar that Ly's path crossed with Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse, a meeting that would significantly shape the course of his spiritual journey. Shaykh Ibrahim, upon visiting Yoff after his return from his famous ‘Rihlatul Konakiriya’ journey across West Africa came to Yoff to visit Sayidina Issa Laye, and after witnessing Ly's teaching, saw in him a potential that surpassed the role of a mere teacher. Shaykh Ibrahim's insight into Ly's spiritual stature prompted him to invite Ly to Kaolack, marking the beginning of a deep and influential relationship between them. Ly became a devoted disciple and muqaddam (deputy) of Shaykh Ibrahim, embracing his teachings and undertaking significant spiritual disciplines, including prolonged periods of Khalwa, on his behalf.
Ly's dedication to his spiritual practice and his role as a muqaddam under Shaykh Ibrahim led him to marry Shaykh Ibrahim's daughter, Khadija Niasse (Ya Khady Faty), further solidifying his ties to the Niasse family and their spiritual lineage. Ly spent over two decades living closely with Shaykh Ibrahim, a time during which he received numerous Ijazas (authorizations) from leading figures of the time, including Muhammad Khalifa Niasse, Shaykh Mansour Ibn Al-Hajj Malick Sy and Sidi Tayyib al-Tidjani.
Amidst his travels across Senegal and Gambia, Ly's visit to Gunjur to do a Khalwa in the same place Shaykh Omar Futi Taal made Khalwa there marked a significant encounter with Shaykh Mame Mass Kah, one of the greatest Awliya of Gambia, highlighting the widespread recognition and respect Ly garnered within the spiritual communities across the region.
As his mother - who lived in Thiaroye, a small village in greater Dakar - aged, Ly found a balance between his spiritual commitments and familial duties, dividing his time between Thiaroye and Medina Baye in Kaolack. Recognizing the importance of being close to his mother and community, Ly eventually relocated to Thiaroye permanently. There, he opened his Zawiya, a spiritual center that became a beacon of Islamic learning and practice.
A pivotal moment in Ly's life came when Sidi Tayyib Tidjani, the great-grandson of Shaykh Ahmad Tidjani, met him in Kaolack during his visit there to Shaykh Ibrahim Niasse. This meeting underscored Ly's esteemed position within the community. Subsequently, Sidi Tayyib traveled to Dakar to inaugurate Ly's Zawiya in Thiaroye, a significant event that not only honored Ly's spiritual contributions but also provided him with Ijaza, further affirming his authority and standing within the Tijaniyya Sufi order.
Thierno Yahya Ly's life was a testament to his deep spiritual commitment, marked by his significant contributions to Islamic scholarship and practice. Buried in his Zawiya in Thiaroye, his legacy continues to inspire, embodying the essence of Islamic mysticism and devotion.
