SHAYKH AHMAD AR-RUFĀ‘Ī NDA SALĀTĪ: BIOGRAPHY

Written By: Dr. Abdur-Razaq Mustapha B. Solagberu

Shaykh   Nda   Salati i.e. Shaykh  Ahmad ar-Rufai son of AbuBakr ibn  Ahmad  Rufai, was believed to have been born between 1891 and 1896. His father is Shaykh  AbuBakr while his mother was Sa‘ādat bint Shaykh Khalīllullah Gbodofu.  The lineage of Shaykh Nda Salati is traced to Nupe tribe, a tribe that originated in the then Arab world and spread to Timbuktu and from there to Bula in the present Niger State, then to Ilorin.

The grand father of Shaykh Nda Salati is believed to have emigrated to Ilorin during the reign of the first Emir of Ilorin, Abdus Salam (d. 1842). History had it that the mother of Shaykh Nda Salati Sa'adat was almost at the age of menopause by the time she gave birth to Shaykh Nda Salati.

Shaykh Nda Salati was the reality of many prophesies, for instance, his maternal grand father Shaykh Khalillullah Gbodofu made prediction, when his daughter, i.e. mother of Shaykh Nda Salati complained to him to pray for her. It was then that Shaykh Khalillullah Gbodofu prayed for her and predicted that she would soon be blessed with a son who will be 'Alim, remembering Allah's name by beating of Bandiri (tambourine).

Before Alfa Nda Salātī, the person named Salatī was Shaykh Aminullahi, nicknamed as Alfa Nda Agba. Alfa Nda Agba was a friend to Shaykh AbuBakr the father of Nda Salātī. He (Alfa Nda Agba) made his own prophesy on Shaykh Nda Salātī and even recommended that two goats be slaughtered on the naming ceremony day of Shaykh Nda Salātī, because, according to him, he would be a great man, a great scholar.

Shaykh Nda Salātī got his nickname as a result of being Nupe, he was called Nda and he added Salātī to his epithet as a result of a famous poem which he composed and used to recite most often at any ceremony. The poem read thus:

     صَلاَتِي وَ تَسْلِيمِي وَ اَزْكَي تَحِيَاتِي ** عَلَي الْمُصْطَفَي الْمُخْتَار خَيْرِ الْبَرِيَةِ

Salātī wa Tasleemī wa Azkā Tahiyātī ** ‘alā-l Mustafā-l Mukhtār, Khayri-l Bariyyati

Meaning:

May the salutation and blessing of Allah, as well as purest form of my greeting ** be upon the Mustapha the al-Mukhtar the specifically chosen (prophet), the best of all mankind.

Due to the poem which started as Salātī, the word was added to his epithet.

Shaykh Nda Salati was brought up at Gbodofu, his maternal home under the supervision of his uncle, Shaykh Muhammad Qāsim Gbodofu, who was responsible for his education and trainings. He (Shaykh Nda Salātī) completed the learning of the Glorious Qur'an under Shaykh Muhammad Qāsim, who also exposed him to the elementary knowledge of Arabic and Islamic studies as well as Sufi life such as fasting, keep vigil nights to observe non-obligatory prayers and recitation of Sufi litanies among others. It was Shaykh Muhammad Qāsim that first taught Shaykh Nda Salātī different aspects of Islamic studies such as Islamic jurisprudence (fiqhu). Books studied on it under him included Muqaddimat al-‘Izziyyah, Matn Risālat of Abū Zayd al-Qayrawwānī. On the area of  Tafsir (Quranic Exegesis), Tafsir al-Jalālayn was studied. On the area of Tawhīd (Science of Islamic Monotheism), Kitab al Awjal fī ‘Ilm Fuyūda-l Asf Rabbaniyyah Fi-l Qadiriyyah. It is believed by some writers especially, Dr. Khalihullahi Muhammad   'Uthman Gbodofu that both Shaykh Khalillullah and Shaykh Muhammad Qasim both of Gbodofu prepared Shaykh Nda Salātī for his further responsibility.

Shaykh Nda Salati later moved to Shaykh Erubu where he continued with his studies. It was with him that Shaykh Nda Salātī further studied Tafsir al-Qur'an which he had earlier studied from Shaykh Muhammad Qasim Gbodofu. Shaykh Nda Salātī also studied under Shaykh Muhammad Aminullahi Sarumi where he acquired more knowledge on Arabic language and Arabic Arithmetic-Calculation (Hisāb). It was from him that Shaykh Nda Salātī studied the famous book on Arabic grammar entitled Alfiyyah ibn Malik. He also learnt from him the Da'awah methodology and many other Arabic works such as kitab Shi'ru al-jahili book on the collection of poems of pre-Islamic Era. Shaykh Abba Kati al-Fidiki of Kano.

Considering the Sufi aspect of Shaykh Nda Salātī, it will be recalled that Shaykh Nda Salātī was brought up by his maternal grandfather Shaykh Khalillullah Gbodofu who exposed him to Sufi tendencies such as keeping night vigil for chanting the names of Allah and making supererogatory ritual prayers (Nawafīl) as well as observing non-obligatory fasting among others.

Qadiriyyah was the Sufi order (Tariqah) adopted by people of Gbodofu, sequel to that, Shaykh Nda Salātī was introduced to the Qadiriyyah order at his tender age. He was initially initiated into the Ahlu-l Bayt faction of the Qadiriyyah order by his maternal grandfather, Shaykh Khalillullah Gbodofu, who was responsible for his upbringing as indicated earlier. Under the instruction of Shaykh Khalillullah, his uncle, Shaykh Muhammad Qasim continued to monitor and supervise him for some period of time before he later moved to Shaykh Erubu where he was initiated into Kuntiyyah form of the Qadiriyyah Sufi order. He later traveled to Kano where he met with Shaykh Abba Kati of al-fidiki area and re-newed his initiation into the Qadiriyyah order and also got initiation into the Samaniyyah form of the Qadiriyyah Sufi order between 1933 and 1934, it was after then that he met with Shaykh Nasir Kabara(d. 1996) who appointed him as his Khalifah (Representative) in the south west of Nigeria.

Shaykh Nda Salati can be considered as one of the great contributors to the spread of Qadiriyyah in Ilorin in particular and Yoruba land as a whole. By 1930s when he appeared on the Sufi scene, most of the adherents of the Qadiriyyah order, except few ones who used to attend Halqah Dhikr at centres, considered it appropriate to recite their Sufi litanies in private.

Shaykh Nda Salati changed their understanding of the Tariqah and made it more popular through his preaching and public enlightenment. He therefore constructed the first Qadiriyyah Zawiyyah in Ilorin in front of his house in 1936 or 1954. Whatever may be the year, he constructed the Zawiyyah. It has to be stated that it served as a unifying factor for the Qadiriyyah in the town as well as the nation.

In 1953 when Shaykh Nasiru Kabara of Kano returned to Kano from his first trip to Baghdad, he introduced some innovations into the Qadiriyyah order, which include beating of Bandiri (tambourine) while chanting the names of Allah and celebration of mawlid (birthday) of Shaykh AbdulQadir, (the leader of Qadiriyyah order.

The impact of the innovation spread to Ilorin as Shaykh Nda Salātī adopted all the innovations. Sequel of that, Zawiyyah of Shaykh Nda Salātī in Ilorin became a centre where members of the Qadiriyyah throughout the country, especially those from south west of the country gathered to celebrate the birthday of Shaykh AbdulQadir Jaylani(d. 1166.CE).

Shaykh Nda Salātī had many students, Sufi disciples and followers who contributed in one way or another to the understanding and spread of the Qadiriyyah order in their respective locations, they received Ijazah (License) from the Shaykh. Among the early recipients of Ijazah from Shaykh Nda Salātī include the following: Al-hajj Muhammad Ibrahim, known as Alfa Mamman Maimasa (d. 1982), Alfa Ibrahim Bodurin Sakama, (d. 1994), Al-Hajj Sambo Oganija(d. 1990), Al-Hajj Busari (Busayri) Onimango(d. 1995), Mallam Baba Ile-Elepa, Al-hajj Sanusi Idi opopo Okesuna, Mallam Liman Gbodofu, Al-Hajj Abdul-Baqi and Al-Hajj Ayinla fagba(d. 2001),  Al-Hajj Isiaka Apalando,  all in Ilorin.

Others include Shaykh Abdul-Azeez Olohungbo, Shaykh Alfa Dundun, Al-hajj Oba Shiru, Shaykh Salahudeen of Ede and a host of many others.

Through Shaykh Nda Salātī and some of his Sufi disciples, the Qadiriyyah spread to some states of the federation and some neighbouring countries such as Ghana and Benin Republic.

Shaykh Nda Salati had interest in the construction of mosques. Based on that, he had honor of the construction of mosques in different areas and states. For illustration, he constructed a mosque at the front of his house which served as the first Zawiyyah of the Qadiriyyah order in Ilorin . He also contributed to the construction of mosques at Ibadan, Abeokuta, Lagos among many others.

Works of different Sufi aspects mainly poetry are accredited to Shaykh Nda Salātī. His poems are on history, Sufi aspects like Tawassul (Fervent Plea)and Mad'h (Eulogy). Furthermore, a number of miracles were ascribed to him .

Shaykh Nda Salati died on Thursday 7th April, 1966. He was survived by children and grandchildren. They include khalifah Ibrahim, Al-hajj AbuBakr Nda Shiko(d. 1969) Al-hajj Shehu AbdulQadir, Shaykh Abdullahi(d. 2003), al-Hajjah Rabi'ah(d. 1992),  al-Hajjah Salamah, al-Hajjah Habibah, al-Hajja Rahmat,  al-Hajjah 'Aishah, al-Hajjah Halimah, Salamah Tinuke, al- Hajjah Salamah,  Maimunat, al-Hajjah Hawa, al-Hajjah Ummul-khyar and al-Hajjah Fatimah.
