ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BLESSED ZĀWIYA OF OUR MASTER [SHAYKH AHMAD AL-TIJĀNĪ (RA)]

"Before the establishment of the blessed Zawiya the companions of our master [Shaykh Ahmad al-Tijani] used to congregate for the daily remembrance beside the door of his house in Fez, and occasionally in some of the city's mosques, until the Prophet ﷺ commanded our master to construct the blessed zawiya and select the best and purest land for it. He chose the location, based upon an indication from the Prophet ﷺ, in the city quarter of Dardās known today as al-Balīda.
He purchased the location with his lawful and righteously-obtained wealth, and at that time there was a delapidated ruin upon the site, overgrown with large vines. The ruins were imposing, and no one was able to enter them alone. It has been transmitted to me from a reliable source that a sound used to be heard within the ruins from time to time as if there was a congregation making dhikr, and many of the ecstatics (majadhīb) of Fez used to incline towards that place. Before the zawiya's construction a famous majdhūb named Sidi al-Lahbi used to visit the ruin and place his ear to its door, saying to the onlookers, 'Come to this place and you too will hear the dhikr.' After the establishment of the zawiya there [Sidi al-Lahbi] took to saying in the streets, in the manner of the majadhīb, 'Fez has been protected, especially al-Dardās.' ...
When our master (ra) wished to build [the zawiya], the people of Fez came together with great hostility to prevent its construction. This matter eventually reached the honorable Amīr al-Mu'minīn Mawlay Sulayman [the Sultan of Morocco] who forced them to accept the construction due to what he had witnessed from the miracles and wonders of our master Shaykh al-Tijani. He sent to our master a sum of money to assist in the building of the zawiya and to carry out whatever was needed. Our master returned the wealth in its entirety, saying, 'I have no need for that which you have given. The affair of this zawiya is established by God.' ...
When our master began carrying out the construction of the blessed zawiya, he ordered for a stone to be cut to a specific shape, then he engraved upon the stone the Greatest Name of Allah, writing with it, 'O Allah, I ask you by the right of Your Great and Most Majestic Name that you preserve my companions from Qāf to Qāf (i.e. wherever they may be).' Then he commanded that the stone be buried in the foundation of the blessed zawiya's wall, and it has also been said it was placed at the top of the wall. And among those who attended the burying [of the Greatest Name] was the great Muqaddam Sidi Umar, the grandson of the mighty gnostic and spiritual pole Sidi Abd al-Azīz al-Dabbagh, and others from the elite disciples of our master. It may be that the location of the Great Name is the second column to the right of the noble grave [of Shaykh al-Tijani], known to the elect as the 'Column of Gold'..."
